Chapter 1
It was late in the day as Haru sat at a table in the Anteiku coffee shop. He ordered his usual. A dark roast with two creams and four sugars. I have to remember to bring Egao to Uta’s mask shop today. He thought as a college student with an eye patch over his right eye handed him his morning coffee.
“ Thank you...uhm…?” Haru looked at the name tag on the boy’s uniform. “Kaneki...thank you.” The boy bowed and turned to leave. Haru watched him go and then turned his attention to his cup. when did he start working here. Haru sat and sipped his coffee, accidentally burning his tongue. About ten minutes later he left the shop and set out to look for his younger brother.
He found Egao at the cemetery sitting in front of their father’s headstone. Their father’s death had been the result of a fight with the Dove organization. Before his death he had told Haru to take Egao and run while he held them off, promising that he would catch up to them later, but he had died during the struggle. Egao had been affected by his fathers death far more than Haru. He would frequent the cemetery each month to pay his old man a visit and tell him about his troubles at school. Egao had loved his father the most out of his parents and following his death, Egao had changed drastically. Once a bright and eccentric child always wearing an enthusiastic smile or grin on his face. His name, meaning smile, fit his personality to a T. The passing of his dad made verbal irony of his name as his persona now reflected a more dark brooding nature. He never smiled after that. He became something of an outcast at his school and his grades began to plummet. Kids teased him, bullied him, and beat him up after school almost daily. It was a wonder to Haru how any of them were still alive. He envied his brother’s patience, if it had been him, he would have eaten them all. Haru didn’t enjoy eating humans as much as some ghouls. He rather resented himself wanting, like so few others, to be human. Egao didn’t seem to mind being a ghoul. On the contrary he loved to feast on humans, though you couldn’t tell if you didn’t know him well. Maybe he didn’t enjoy it as much as the deceased ghoul Rize but he desired it with a passion all the same.
“Hey Egao!” Egao jumped at the sound of his name. He quickly spun around and saw his older brother looking down on him with a grin spread ear to ear.
“what are you so happy about?” Depression heavy in his tone as he stood up to face Haru.
“Today is the day we pay Uta a visit at the HySy Art Mask Studio.”
“Oh, yeah....” Egao said displeased.
“Why do you have to be so depressing?” Haru’s grin faded. “You should be happy. It will be fun.”
“I just want dad back.” said Egao looking at his feet.
“Yeah, I know...me too.” The silence that followed was nerve racking. Haru motioned for Egao to follow as he proceeded in the direction he had come. Egao followed, his eyes still on his feet. He knew he was supposed to be happy about getting his mask. It was supposed to represent him and his personality while while also keeping his identity secret to Dove members should he run into them. The mask was supposed to be special and unique to each ghoul. Egao left reality for the dark void on his mind while he walked with his brother.
"Haru take your brother and get out of here."
"But Dad what about you?"
"Don't worry I'll be fine. I'll catch up to you later. Keep your brother safe."
Haru grabbed hold of Egao and ran like his father told him.
"We have to go back. Dad needs our help!"
"Egao!”
“What?”
“Egao!”
“Egao!”
He looked up at his brother realizing he had been lost in thought.
“What do you want Haru?” He said with an air of annoyance. use would we be to him? We're just kids. We would
“We’re here.”
Egao glanced at the shop for a second before returning his eyes to the pavement.
“Come on bro it’ll be simple and quick. All he’ll do is is ask questions and take measurements. We will be in and out faster than you think”
Egao doubted it. Haru held the door open for his brother. He followed close behind. Egao took note of how many masks were on display and was about to ask Haru why they had to get custom masks when the shop owner approached them. Egao kept his mouth shut. He was dressed in a grey tank top underneath a black wrap sweater, along with harem pants and black sandals. The man before them was very slender and mysterious. much like Egao and had a strange aura around him, one that Egao couldn’t quite identify. So instead he ignored his curiosity. The man looked comfortable sitting on one of the many stools that littered his shop. The man spoke.
“Welcome...My name is Uta and this is my shop.”
“Hi Uta, I brought my little brother like I said.”
Uta looked towards Egao and smiled warmly.
“It’s a pleasure to meet the younger brother of one of my many favored associates.”
“Can we just get this over with?” Egao turned towards Haru with uncertainty written across his face.
“Patience my young friend. This will take only a few minutes.”
Egao slumped over his shoulders and took a seat on a stool that Uta was gracefully indicating with a wave of his hand.
“what exactly are you doing?” Egao questioned Uta aggressively despite his melancholy demeanor.
“I am taking your measurements much like any talor would if you were being suited for formal wear.”
Egao’s expression softened again to it’s usual blandness.
It was like routine.
“Any allergies to metals, latex, rubber?”
“No.”
“Do you want a full mask or half?”
“wha-”
“What is your favorite color?”
